Great Reading Quotes #1

I love college campuses, don’t you?  A word nerd can find so much inspiration.

When I was picking my son up from “Camp Invention” at Radford University, I stumbled upon this quote from the great Henry David Thoreau in the Alumni Garden:

Thoreau quote

I hope you are spending plenty of time in this noble exercise.

Hmm.  I wonder what he meant by “true books”?  Perhaps not  Fifty Shades of Gray?

Happy Reading!

  1. I was wondering the same thing-what he meant by true books. Probably books written with integrity, skill at craft, with substance.Just a guess. And then we have to wonder how to read with a true spirit. . .

  2. Ha… I like that he says it’s a “noble” exercise. Reading challenging literature, or true books, as he puts it, is certainly noble, but not exactly fun. It’s summer time, so I’m up for books that are a little less noble.

  3. What a great quote! And I’m sure Thoreau would roll over in his grave…of at least blush furiously…if he came across Fifty Shades of Grey!

I love college campuses too! My husband and I love to take our girls to Virginia Tech and show them all of our favorite spots. Although it’s a little depressing to look at the college students. When did they start admitting middle schoolers to college?!
